Horn Speakers
A horn loudspeaker is a loudspeaker or loudspeaker element which uses an acoustic horn to increase the overall efficiency of the driving element(s). A common form (right) consists of a compression driver which produces sound waves with a small metal diaphragm vibrated by an electromagnet, attached to a horn, a flaring duct to conduct the sound waves to the open air. Another type is a woofer driver mounted in a loudspeaker enclosure which is divided by internal partitions to form a zigzag flaring duct which functions as a horn; this type is called a folded horn speaker. The horn serves to improve the coupling efficiency between the speaker driver and the air.

Features of Horn Speakers

High Efficiency
Converts more electrical power into audible sound compared to other speakers.

Directional Sound
Provides focused sound output, making it ideal for large or outdoor areas.

Enhanced Clarity
Suitable for vocals and announcements over long distances.
Advantages of Horn Speakers
Loud and Focused Sound
Horn speakers are louder than normal speakers. They can cover large areas without using much power.
01
Clear in Noisy Places
Even in factories, train stations, or playgrounds, horn speakers keep the message easy to hear.
02
Long-Distance Coverage
A good outdoor horn speaker can send sound over 100 meters, perfect for wide spaces.
03
Strong and Weatherproof
Many waterproof horn speakers are made with durable plastic or metal. They resist rain, dust, and sun. Look for IP65-rated horn speakers for outdoor use.
04
Easy to Install
Most models come with mounting brackets. You can fix them to walls, poles, or ceilings in minutes.
05
Type of Horn Speakers
Compression driver horn loudspeakers
Composed of a tweeter compression driver (a small diaphragm + phase plug) and a horn, the diaphragm's vibrations compress air through the phase plug, which is then amplified by the horn and radiated.
Direct radiating horn loudspeakers
The diaphragm of a traditional loudspeaker is mounted directly on the throat of the horn, directly driving the air. This offers a simpler structure and lower cost, but is slightly less sensitive than a compression driver type.

Applications of Horn Speakers
Military Communications: In military settings, especially during the World Wars, horn loudspeakers were crucial. They were used for broadcasting orders and alerts across vast fields and barracks. Their ability to cut through ambient noise made them indispensable for coordinating troop movements and conveying critical information.
Maritime Announcements: On ships, especially during the era of large ocean liners and naval vessels, horn loudspeakers were used to communicate across the decks and to other ships. The horn's capacity to send clear messages across the noisy backdrop of the sea was vital for navigation and safety announcements.
Railway Stations: Railway stations, bustling with travelers and trains, relied on horn loudspeakers for announcements regarding arrivals, departures, and platform changes. Their effectiveness in a noisy, open-air environment ensured smooth transit and communication for passengers and staff alike.
Early Automotive Heralds: In the early days of automobiles, horns were not just signaling devices but also a form of announcing the vehicle's presence in a predominantly pedestrian and horse-drawn carriage environment. These horns, loud and distinctive, played a key role in the safety and navigation of early automobiles.
Classroom Order: In schools, particularly in outdoor settings or large classrooms, horn loudspeakers facilitated the management of students. They were used for signaling the change of classes, making general announcements, and even for outdoor teaching sessions, ensuring that the teacher's voice was heard by all students.
Emergency Broadcasts
In times of emergency, such as natural disasters or public crises, horn loudspeakers were vital for disseminating urgent information and instructions to the public. Their ability to deliver messages clearly over large areas made them indispensable tools for civil defense and emergency response teams.
Factory Announcements
In the bustling environment of factories and industrial settings, horn loudspeakers were used to convey important announcements. They helped in coordinating shifts, announcing breaks, or relaying safety warnings, ensuring that messages were heard over the noise of machinery.
Sports Events
At outdoor sports events, especially in stadiums without modern PA systems, horn loudspeakers were used to announce players, relay scores, and provide commentary. Their use was crucial in keeping the audience engaged and informed throughout the event.
Movie Theaters
In the early days of cinema, particularly during the silent film era, horn loudspeakers were sometimes used to project music or live commentary alongside the film. They helped create a more immersive experience for the audience in a time when synchronized sound was not yet a feature of films.
Horn Speaker Design Elements
Compression Drivers
At the heart of a horn speaker is the compression driver. This type of driver uses a diaphragm that is coupled to a small throat (the entry point of the horn), which compresses the sound waves before they are expanded through the horn. This compression allows for greater efficiency and control over sound dispersion.
Compression drivers are typically made from materials like aluminum, titanium, or beryllium, chosen for their rigidity and lightness. These drivers are capable of reproducing a wide range of frequencies, although they are most commonly used for midrange and high-frequency reproduction in horn-loaded systems.
Horn Geometry
The geometry of the horn is critical to its performance. As mentioned earlier, different horn profiles (exponential, conical, etc.) offer different benefits, and the ideal choice depends on the intended application of the speaker.
Throat Size: The throat is the narrowest part of the horn, where the driver is mounted. A smaller throat size increases efficiency but can limit low-frequency response.
Mouth Size: The mouth of the horn is the wide, open end. Larger mouths provide better low-frequency extension and smoother frequency response, but they also make the horn physically larger.
Flare Rate: This refers to the rate at which the horn expands. A faster flare rate (i.e., wider angle) produces better high-frequency dispersion, while a slower flare rate improves low-frequency response.
Common Materials Used in Horn Speakers
Plastic (ABS, Polycarbonate)
Lightweight and durable, ideal for mass production.
Fiberglass
Used for high-performance horns requiring strength and resonance control.
Metal (Aluminum, Steel)
Durable and sometimes used for vintage or heavy-duty horns.
Wood
Employed in premium or custom audiophile horn designs for warm sound characteristics.
- Power (W): Higher wattage means louder sound
- Impedance or IP network support
- Material: ABS or aluminum for long-term outdoor use
- Horn size and angle: A wider angle gives broader coverage
- Weather rating : IP65 or above for outdoor models

How Horn Speakers Are Made
Compression Driver Assembly
Contains a diaphragm, voice coil, and phase plug. It converts electrical signals into sound at the throat of the horn.
01
Horn Throat
A narrow section that connects the driver to the expanding flare, helping to control wave propagation.
02
Horn Flare
The gradually widening part of the horn that shapes and amplifies the sound. It can be exponential, conical, or tractrix in shape.
03
Horn Mouth
The final, wide opening of the horn that efficiently radiates sound into the air.
04
Mounting Enclosure (Optional)
Some horn speakers are enclosed in wooden or plastic boxes, especially for bass reproduction, where the horn may be folded to save space.
